Jal Jeevan Mission (Har Ghar Jal)

Functional tap water connection to every rural household, with community-managed village water supply systems.

About this scheme

Launched on 15 August 2019 by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Jal Jeevan Mission provides a Functional Household Tap Connection delivering 55 litres per capita per day of prescribed quality to every rural home. Implementation is decentralised, with Village Water and Sanitation Committees or Pani Samitis planning, implementing and maintaining the village scheme. The mission also funds greywater management, source sustainability measures such as recharge and reuse, and water quality testing laboratories and field testing kits.

Who can apply

  • All rural households in the country
  • Priority for water quality affected habitations, drought prone and desert areas, SC and ST majority habitations and aspirational districts
  • Village must constitute a Village Water and Sanitation Committee
  • Community contributes 5-10% of capital cost in cash or kind in most areas

Documents required

  • Aadhaar card for household registration
  • Proof of residence in the village
  • Gram Sabha resolution for the Village Action Plan
  • Community contribution receipt where applicable

How to apply

  • 1Gram Sabha constitutes a Village Water and Sanitation Committee
  • 2Village Action Plan is prepared with community participation
  • 3Plan is approved by the District Water and Sanitation Mission
  • 4Scheme is executed and household tap connections are provided
  • 5Village committee takes over operation and maintenance
